The Soul is Like a Sponge Romans 3:13-14 Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Thoughts for Today: Not long ago Pastor Ty and I were playing golf with two guys we had just met. It didnt take long before one of the guys hit a bad shot and as a result he pounded his club in disgust and cussed in anger. This wasnt just one four letter word, but such a litany of profanity it would have made a construction worker blush. Later in the cart Ty said to me, The soul is like a sponge, when squeezed whatever is in it pours out. Think about that for a few minutes. I dont know about you, but I keep myself under pretty good control most of the time. So good in fact I sometimes think Im a good person and relatively sin free. That is until I get pushed (or squeezed) -- by an event or the right sequence of events -- when without warning an inappropriate thought leaps unwanted into my head or an improper word escapes my mouth. I always think of what Pastor Ty said that day about the soul -- I know without doubt I am a sinner and desperately need Jesus. This is what Paul is talking about in our passage today when he quotes these Old Testament passages: Their throats are open graves...their tongues practice deceit...the poison of vipers is on their lips...their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Hes not talking about some ill-mannered golfer on the golf course -- hes talking about you and me. Questions to Ponder: Lets stop pretending -- no matter how good we think we are we are all sinners -- as Paul tells us our throats, tongues, lips, and mouths convict us. Even if no one heard it, what words have you spoken or thought need to be forgiven? Ask Jesus, His sacrifice covers all of our unrighteousness.
