The South Sudan Humanitarian Country Team – a group including UN - TopicsExpress

The South Sudan Humanitarian Country Team – a group including UN and NGO leadership as well as donor partners – visited Lankien in Jonglei State yesterday. The area, which is isolated from main supply routes, faces crisis levels of food and nutrition insecurity as well as a spike in cases of kala-azar, an endemic disease. “The visit demonstrated the myriad ways this conflict is affecting many aspects of peoples’ lives. Their food security is threatened by limited harvests, livestock diseases, as well as isolation from markets. Food insecure people are more vulnerable to disease, like kala-azar, and take longer to recover, while diseases, in turn, exacerbate malnutrition,” said Sue Lautze, acting Humanitarian Coordinator. “Partner organizations are working hard responding with health care, water and sanitation support, and agricultural livelihoods activities, but sustained support is needed in Lankien – and many areas like it throughout South Sudan – where communities’ resources are stretched to the limit.”
