The Southern California based Reggae, Hip-Hop Rock Kingpins Krooked Treez have been named “2013’s Breakout Artist of The Year,” by the leading reggae-rock magazine, The Pier. The triumphant win was unanimous through a national campaign voted by the genre’s cult-like following fan-base. They’ve quickly gained momentum in the national music scene, touring abroad to an ever-growing rich fan-base, soon after their debut CD Higher Place released in mid 2013. After an explosive 2013 appearance on the 311 Cruise, performing with acts like 311, Less Than Jake, Rebelution and comedian Tom Green, Krooked Treez rocked three full houses of new fans at House of Blues on Sunset Strip and headlined the U.S. Grand Prix Kick-Off Party for the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, which kicked off their first international performance in the Black Sea at Russias famed Kubana Festival for an audience of nearly 200,000 where they shared the stage with System of a Down, Misfits and Wutang. In 2014, Krooked Treez flourished in the national music scene, taking over main-stages throughout the states and across the vast seas, performing with the likes of Matisyahu and Dirty Heads at Summer Meltdown and with E-40 and Sean Kingston at the Good Vibes Music Festival, which lead them to an invitation as main-stage act at the California Roots Music and Arts Festival. There, they performed with major acts as 311, Ziggy and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Steel Pulse, Pepper, Katchafire, SOJA and Iration. South Park Music Festival quickly took notice of the bands and graciously invited in them to perform alongside Slightly Stoopid, Tech N9ne, Matisyahu and Kottonmouth Kings, Due to an outpouring of overseas fan-requests from Russia, the Kubana Festival listened, inviting the seven eye-catching member band back to perform over the Black Seas with Korn, Matisyahu and Austrailia’s Knife Party. When they returned to the states, that same week the band performed on the nostalgic Queen Mary for the Shoreline Jam Festival, with the Dirty Heads, Collie Buddz other major hitters. The band has been a media favorite, as fans and industry folks applaud huge festival circuit success. Krooked Treez came to fruition when O Brown, a veteran Belizean/Mexican emcee who was mentored by and performed with West Coast Legend B-Real of Cypress Hill connected with Belizean reggae and R&B Singer BZ-Bwai. The result was hard-skanking single Rebel, OBrowns first stab at reggae-stylee. Blending OBrowns hard knock life lyricism and party-rocking mic mechanics with BZ Bwais soulful patois and sinister smooth vocals, the group quickly earned props from OBrowns famous hip-hop connects DJ Muggs and The Soul Assassins, who encouraged the group to further explore the reggae/hip-hop style. OBrown and BZ-Bwai went back into the studio and soon recruited a skilled lineup of musicians to perform live. The band is comprised of veteran guitarist and California original Bobby Zen on bass; East Coast reggae percussionist Stephen Lashbrook; ultra-talented guitarist Adam Willis, who played lead guitar for the Hip Hop legend Nas at the recent 2013 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival with nearly 80,000 in attendance, drummer extraordinaire and music producer Alex Puente, along with keyboardist Paul Monico, a multi-faceted artist, who tightens the band with a free-flowing, unique sound that only these artists can deliver. Krooked Treez boasts years of experience amongst its members, whose backgrounds and diverse musical styles create a rich sound to compliment the vocal styles of OBrown and BZ-Bwai. The album delivers on the promise of Rebel, with OBrowns rugged delivery bringing added weight to the lyrics, which often revolve around struggle and triumph. Songs like Better Days reference personal hardship, such as the 2003 death of his best friend and rhyme partner in the group Trilogy. 2 double 03 best friend died - Never gave up man now you know why - So I take this all the way to the sky. OBrown raps in his distinctive flow. Meanwhile, BZ-Bwai simply laces the hooks and melodies, adding an authentic Caribbean vibe to the mix. And while both OBrown and BZ Bwai big up Belize each chance they get, there is no mistaking the fact that this is a California joint through and through. The summer breeze smooth single So In Love With California quickly became the Golden States summer anthem.
