The Spiritual Ponderings of a Simple Preacher Thursday, August 29, 2013 by Pastor Anthony Hovey The Cry Of The Crushed - Part 1 Psalms 119:121-128 Psalms 119:121-128… 121 I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors. 122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me. 123 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness. 124 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes. 125 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies. 126 It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law. 127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold. 128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way. In this, the sixteenth stanza of the 22 contained within this psalm, we find the psalmist still surrounded by his enemies, but now we catch a glimpse of impatience on his part toward God… He tells the Lord it is time for thee…to work (v.26)…We can all smile at that statement, because we have often told Him much the same thing… We get impatience with God and wonder why He doesn’t work when we think He ought to, in the way we think He should… We forget that His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isa. 55:8]… We forget that He is always working… More often than not, from the pulpit to the pew, we had rather bail-out than buckle-down… We’ve all heard the old saying, when the going gets tough, the tough get going… Well for many Baptist, when the going gets tough, they get gone… I know it’s hard to stay in the fray; that it’s hard to stay focused, but nothing has ever been achieved by quitting… Perseverance is the key to success in any field of endeavor, whether it is sacred or secular… The apostle Paul says that hard work is always rewarded… Galatians 6:9… And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not... If the farmer could get the harvest before he had to cultivate his fields, he would never have to work… But the harvest never comes until after the work is done… I. His Social Struggle Was Emphasized 1. The Path He Navigated (v.121a)… 121a I have done judgment and justice… Exodus 23:13a…And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect… Ephesians 5:15-17… 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. Proverbs 21:3… To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. 2. The Protection He Needed (vv.121b-122)… 121b leave me not to mine oppressors. 122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me… Psalms 140:1,4… 1 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man… 4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings. Psalms 71:4… Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. Proverbs 18:10… The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Selah, Think On These Things…
