The Sports Ladys Daily Highlights: Yesterday the tennis season - TopicsExpress

The Sports Ladys Daily Highlights: Yesterday the tennis season ended with a whimper, when for the first time in the 43 year history of the ATP World Tour Finals, the final match ended in a walkover. Thirty minutes before the marquee clash with Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer withdrew with a back injury. Federer has struggled with back issues in recent years and in his apology to the crowd said that he did everything he could to be ready but at his age it was to risky to try to play in his condition. This is a man who seldom withdraws from matches so fans, including myself, while disappointed knew the injury had to be serious or he would play. That is why, when I came across the column by Alex Chick on Yahoo Sports calling Federers withdrawal shameful and a betrayal to the sport I was shocked. Wouldnt it have been more of a betrayal to the sport for Federer to have, injured himself worse, and be sidelined for many months? Tennis is an individual sport, so when a player is hurt the match must be cancelled. Fans are disappointed but they want the player to recover quickly which cannot happen if they injure themselves more seriously by playing a match hurt. Throughout his career Federer has been a true ambassador for tennis and his conduct has nothing to hurt the image of the sport he love. Thus calling his withdrawal a betrayal is just dead wrong.
