The Stokers have taken a lot of flak over the years for being too insular, too quick to reward their own. But with a ballot this year that included Dale Bailey, John Mantooth, Laird Barron, Caitlin R. Kiernan, Joe Pulver, Sarah Pinborough, and Gregory Frost, among others, I believe theyve made great strides toward shaking that reputation once and for all. That was a legitimate ballot top to bottom. Congratulations to the winners; and, personally speaking, congratulations especially to Laird Barron, for THE BEAUTIFUL THING THAT AWAITS US ALL, a singularly powerful book. Its easily one of the best horror collections not just of 2013, but of the last twenty years. Well done.
