The Story of Stuff project at Western Washington University in Bellingham WA near Vancouver can help us at the TC bring our goal into clearer focus. For example the GDP/GNP is used as measure of socioeconomic progress, a purpose its developers deny. A quick look around shows there are others ways to take the measure, some even accommodating negative growth. A well-known alternative is the GPI ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genuine_progress_indicator). The TC should run a GPI in West Carleton today and again in five years, say, to measure its own contribution to increasing self-reliance and sustainability in the community.
