The Street. The upstairs window caught his eye as he walked his canine pet. He glimpsed the single silhouetted figure behind the grime stained net. He wondered of the lonely soul who sat in semi darkened solitude. Peering at the windswept world outside, from a second storey room. Moving further down the street, a shop front locked with grilles. An ugly mix of shuttered steel and chain hiding the wares within. A casino on the corner with glitzy neon signs ablaze. Calling on the luckless hopefuls to squander their cash away. Crossing to the other side, when the traffic light shone red. He saw a gang of hooded youth and as always turned away his head. The pub he saw had quite a few inside and its door stood ajar. He could hear the raucous laughter and banter tumbling from the bar. Stepping onto the rain slicked road to avoid an abandoned shopping trolley. He stopped awhile as his leashed Retriever was greeted by a stray Border Collie. Sniffing over and territory marked as is custom with their kind. Dog and man resumed their stroll and observations of the night. The lights that glimmered to the west appeared on the horizon. A far cry from the tenement blocks that lined the path he now was striding. But the litter on the pavement and the graffiti on the walls. Were part and parcel of the lives and community of where he was. His nightly journey neared its end as his home came into view. His faithful companion now led the way,he would receive a treat inside,he knew. The key was turned and entrance gained into his home, humble, small. And to his aged infirm mother, all that he had witnessed he did recall. (GMC 2/3/13)
