The Stroop Effect is an interesting effect which demonstrates scientific inquiry into internal cognitions of the human mind. Research on this effect is consistent and we can use this understanding to see, for one example, how internal processes affect one another. Our internal sounding out of language interferes with producing accurate responses. Steven Novella brings up the case of catching Russian agents by using the Stroop Effect. In fact this effect is so reliable that it has been used to catch spies. If a Russian agent is pretending to be American they can be tested to see if they exhibit the Stroop Effect for Russian words. If you cannot read a language, there will be no delay; if you can then you cannot avoid the delay. Here, we can see that the phenomenon is not merely a response because there is an causal effect happening within the brain. This causal effect can be tested in various ways, including observing behaviour, experimental tests, and brain imaging. Research on the Stroop Effect is an instance of scientific investigation which includes strategies of many fields of psychology, showing that we do indeed have objective and valid means of studying the human mind beyond mere behaviour and the limitations of behaviorism. We have sound science which can produce predictive theories. 1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroop_effect 2. psycnet.apa.org/journals/bul/109/2/163/ 3. theness/neurologicablog/index.php/the-color-test/
