The Substation THIS WEEK #2 (Visual Arts/Visiting International Artist/S Korea): Shedding of Culture – Responses to the Institutionalized Boundaries of a Culture By Submullae, curated by Murim Park Friday 14 June to Monday 24 June 2013, 12pm – 9pm The Substation Gallery Admission: Free Opening reception: Thursday 13 June, 7.30pm For this show, a group of Korean artists explores what components constitute boundaries of identity of a culture, and in what context. Through this exploration, these artists, in their own way, recognize and interpret the system which causes a transition of one paradigm to another. Then, they suggest and unfold how in reality these systems proceed, specifically in Korean culture in 21st century, through various media. In 2008, Korean government officially changed a section of social study school text book, which introduced Korean culture as mono-raced and monocultural, to how to live in multi-cultural social environment. This displays the fact that Korea culture has entered into a new phase. This was a huge transition and Korean is now at a dawn of a new era, as they have just reset the boundaries of their culture. The authority and main stream institutions are the last to respond to the ever changing turmoils of society. This means that even though it may seem as Korea has just crossed a big threshold, in reality, the society is ready to move to the next phase. While a center of a culture, by nature, craves stabilization, the edge of a culture constantly throws new disturbances at its center to eventually create a paradigm shift. The participating artists in this show aim to define the meeting points of the pre-existing condition of the core culture and margins of a culture by displaying how the actions and reactions are caused at this friction point.
