The Sun Harmonic is coming to the River Cafe in 5 DAYS!!! Time to start a new Countdown Q&A! (The first ones a two-fer) The answers are long but, wow, are they worth the read. I cant wait to see this guy perform! Q: Who/what first inspired you to take up music? A: I have no memory of life without music. I was 5 years old when my parents put me in to piano and vocal lessons, so I started to sing with a choir and perform at piano recitals before I was in public school. I would say my parents and my music teacher at home in St. Thomas were certainly the inspiration to be a musician, and my overwhelming love (maybe even obsession) of music has taken me over since. I care about music more than anything in this world. It is my singular passion. Other musical influences have guided me along the way; whether it be classical composers like Chopin, Debussy or Beethoven. Or musicians today like Thom Yorke, Jack White or Tom Waits. These influences among many others have inspired me to be the artist I want to be, but music itself, as a medicine, has been the driving force since Day One. Q: You used to play pop/punk music. What made you change your style? A: Pop and Punk happened to be the genre I was listening to at the age of 13, which is when I started to learn guitar and practice songwriting. Naturally, I was writing pop punk songs and playing in that style of band through early high school. As that scene started to change, I began to find other styles and musical periods and my ‘style and songwriting changed along with it. Ive always been balancing genres in my writing; whether it was writing hard rock songs alongside contemporary piano pieces a decade ago, or writing folk songs on guitar and jazz songs on piano lately. I feel my style has always reflected my record collection, which overflows in crates of vinyl records and hundreds of CDs that take up all the space in my house! The answers he sent get better from there. :D Tomorrows question: Q: I understand youve taken to playing every instrument on your recordings, how many instruments do you play? Could you list them? -Laura
