The Sun rings in the New Year by launching a few solar storms that resulted in a dazzling display of aurora all over the world. Although the Sun has been flare quiet recently, a new region (2253) is beginning to give us some M-flare activity, while region 2241 (on the backside) is also actively flaring. A wispy solar storm is hitting now, and a fast solar wind stream is expected to hit within the next day or so. Emergency responders and Ham radio operators may see some disturbances through the 7th, and aurora should be visible at high latitudes during the early part of the week. Conditions should settle down as the week progresses. See details of the recent solar storms, highlights of the gorgeous holiday aurora, and learn how the new solar activity will affect you.
