The Sunnah of Eid Al- Adha All praise is due to Allah, and may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon the Prophet Muhammad 1. Doing Ghusl(Taking a Shower/Bath) It is highly recommended, before going out to perform the Eid prayer to make Ghusl. 2. Eating after the Eid prayer The Prophet would not eat until he had returned from the Salah (Prayer) and he would eat from his sacrifice. 3. Takbeer on the day of Eid This is one of the greatest Sunnahs on the day of Eid because, Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him†(Surah 02. Al-Baqarah, Verse 185) In the case of Eid al- Adha, the takbeer begins on the eve of the Eid day (10th of Dhuâ €™l-Hijjah (at Magrib time) and lasts until the last days of Tashreeq (13th of Dhu’l- Hijjah) . 4. Offering Congratulations The etiquette of Eid also includes the congratulations and good wishes exchanged by people, no matter what the wording, such as saying to one another Taqabbala Allah minna wa minkum (May Allah accept (good deeds) from us and from you†or “Eid mubaarak†and other permissible expressions of congratulations . When the companions of the Prophet met one another on the day of Eid, they would say to one another, “May Allah accept (good deeds) from us and from you. 5. Adorning oneself for the occasion of Eid It was narrated that Jaabir said: The Prophet had a cloak which he would wear on the two Eids and on Fridays. (Saheeh Ibn Khuzaymah, 1756) So a man should wear the best clothes that he has when going out for Eid and also use perfume. With regard to women, they should avoid adorning themselves when they go out for Eid, because they are forbidden to show off their adornments to non-mahram men. It is also haraam for a woman who wants to go out to put on perfume or to expose men to temptation, because they are only going out for the purpose of worship. 6. Women and Children going out to Attend the Eid Prayer Women and children should attend the Eid prayer; this includes married, single, young, old, or menstruating women. 7. Going to the prayer by one route and returning by another It was narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah said: On the day of Eid, the Prophet used to vary his route. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 986) It was said that the reason for that was so that the two routes would testify for him on the Day of Resurrection, for the earth will speak on the Day of Resurrection and say what was done on it, both good and bad. 7. To perform Salatul Eid Salatul Eid is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah (Highly Recommended), the prayer consists of two normal rakat’s (units) (eg. Like the Fajr Prayer) except that you pronounce the takbir (Allahu Akbar) seven times after the opening takbir and before the Qur’anic recital in the first rak’ah. During the second rakâ €™ah, you say the takbir five times after the takbir which is normally made for the standing after the prostration. You should raise your hands during each pronouncement of the takbir. Imam Ash-Shafi and Ahmad say it is preferred to glorify Allah (to say words like Subhan Allah, Al- hamdulillah, and La ilaha illalahu wallahu akbar) between these takbirat. There are no Sunnah prayers before or after the Eid prayer. The Sunnah is to pray the Eid Prayer out doors like at a park or in the desert. 8. The Khutbah (Sermon) of Salatul Eid The Khutbah (Sermon) of Salatul Eid is a Sunnah and so is listening to it, the khutba takes place after the Eid prayer. Abdullah ibn As-Saâ €™ib said: I prayed the Eid prayer with the Messenger of Allah and when he finished the prayer he said: “We will be delivering a khutba. Whoever wishes to stay for the khutba may stay. Whoever would like to leave, may leave.†(Related by Anâ €™Nasai, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah)
