The Sunshine Coast is home to some ordinary and extraordinary animals and plants. Each month, we’ll be sharing some of our Sunshine Coast natives and what makes them special. You’ll be surprised at what’s living in your backyard and what’s hidden away in our environmental reserves. Have you ever seen these beauties? They’re Christmas Bells or Blandfordia grandiflora. This plant is endangered and rarely seen growing in our region. We were excited recently to find them flowering in one of our Environment Levy reserves. This plant once grew in great abundance around Caloundra, Currimundi, Little Mountain and Kawana Island. During the early 1920s and 1930s, local residents collected blooms to send off to the markets. It flowers in early summer and favours wet wallum heathland. Unfortunately few remain in the wild due to the widespread harvesting so if you see a Christmas Bell take only photos away with you.
