The Talensi had the first bloody encounter with the French in 1893 in the North Eastern Province when Lieutenant Gironard Giffard of the French Army visited Tongo. About 100 Talensi lost their lives. And as usual, the invading colonial forces rid the village Tongo of its cattle and sheep.
