The Taliaferro County, Georgia Board of Commissioners have formally granted permission to Civil War Heritage Trails for the installation of an interpretive marker relating to the Civil War near Crawfordville, Georgia. When President Jefferson Davis and his wife Varina fled the Confederate capital city of Richmond in early April 1865 they traveled separately for most of their journey south. Exactly one month later Varina, the Davis children and a small escort spent one night in a tiny Georgia community called Raytown. Five of Jefferson Daviss older siblings were born in Raytown before the Davis family moved to Kentucky several years before Jeffersons birth. Had they not moved the future Confederate President would have been a native Georgian. This interpretive marker, entitled simply Raytown, will describe in more detail the history of the Davis family in Georgia and the plight of Varina Davis and the Davis children as they rode southward. Raytown is the 6th marker site on the Georgia portion of the Jefferson Davis Heritage Trail: civilwarheritagetrails.org/American_Civil_War/GA_Jefferson_Davis.html
