The Tennessee Division of Archaeology will conduct a tour of the Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area on Saturday, August 30, at 10:00 am. Sellars Farm is a fortified Mississippian period mound center established along Spring Creek in central Wilson County, just south of present day Lebanon. Initially founded around A.D. 1100, the site enjoyed a continuous occupation until the mid-14th century. The site is perhaps best known for the discovery of four stone statues during the early 20th century. Led by State Archaeologist Mike Moore, the tour will consist of an approximate two-hour walk on mostly gentle terrain through the site area and along Spring Creek. Participants are strongly encouraged to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellent. The cost for the event is $10 per person with a maximum of $20 per family. The tour will be limited to 25 participants on a first-come first-serve basis. Please contact the Long Hunter State Park office at 615-885-2422 for reservations and payment, or drop by the park office located at 2910 Hobson Pike. Participants should plan to meet in the Sellars Farm parking lot off Poplar Hill Road by 9:45 am. The lot is located just west of the junction of Poplar Hill Road and Spring Creek. In the event of inclement or threatening weather, please call 615-741-1588, ext.109 for a phone message that will state if the tour needs to be postponed to another day. The message will be posted by 8:30 am the day of the tour.
