The Throwaways is also premiering at the Harlem International Film Festival this week! It tells the story of a homeless filmmaker, Ira McKinley, labeled a felon, documenting his struggle to bring positive changes to his community in inner-city Albany, NY. As he strives to get his voice heard and capture the stories of people living on the margins, McKinley confronts his past and battles against the stigma of being formerly incarcerated. The film is a provocative look at the impact of mass incarceration and police brutality on the black community and includes interviews with numerous folks including me, Van Jones and Cornel West.
