The Transition of Ideas: Ever since creative work became personalized, the charges and counter charges of plagiarism became common, and plagiarism became a dirty word. However, I, personally, have nothing against plagiarism (Im not talking about copyright violation and stuff here, cause those are financial matters. Im limiting my comment, to the judging of a creative work, on the basis of whether it has been charged with plagiarism or not). To me its just a process in which an idea transits from one creative work to another. Recently, I encountered an interesting example of such transition (however, justification of my assumption can only be assessed by the ones familiar to the three works of fiction, Im going to mention). The short story collection THE ALEPH by Jorge Luis Borges published in the year 1949 contained a story named The Immortal, which dealt with a certain idea regarding immortality and its consequences. The episode named Requiem for Methuselah from the Star Trek: The Original Series season 3 telecasted somewhere back in 1969 was evidently inspired by this story (reference point: in Borges story the narrator was tribune of a legion quartered in Berenice and got to know about the secret river that purifies men of death, from a bloody rider approaching from the east, while in Requiem for Methuselah Mr. Flint claimed that he was a soldier, and after falling in battle and later recovering he discovered he could not die). Later on the movie The Man from Earth released in the year 2007 seems to be influenced by the mentioned episode of Star Trek (reference point: Mr. Flint in Requiem for Methuselah claims to have been Da Vinci, Brahms, Solomon, Alexander, Lazarus, and others during his lifetime, while Professor John Oldman in the movie The Man from Earth claims to have been Jesus and others). p.s: I seriously doubt if the idea in Borges story was original either, cause i believe that Barbara Grizzuti Harrison was right in saying that There are no original ideas. There are only original people.
