The Twelve Stones and Tribes- The Complete Family (Part 1) Ex 39:8-14 They fashioned the breastpiece—the work of a skilled craftsman. They made it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen. It was square—a span long and a span wide—and folded double. Then they mounted four rows of precious stones on it. The first row was carnelian, chrysolite and beryl; the second row was turquoise, lapis lazuli and emerald; the third row was jacinth, agate and amethyst; the fourth row was topaz, onyx and jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings. There were twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes. This is going a little backwards for the moment. I want to look at the word seal. This word in Hebrew is Chowtham. Which translates to seal, signet, signet ring. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, we will see the Lord use the words seal numerous times, and most people picture a wax seal on a scroll, but as you get deeper into the symbology that the Lord uses and the culture of that time, this usually referred to a persons signature. Not that there is a lot of difference between a persons personal seal and their signature at that time. Going forward.... The number twelve often indicates governmental perfection, or complete divine governance. The last few Sundays have been about Covenants leading up to the marriage covenant. And at this point it probably seems odd that I would throw in the stones and talk about the Priestly garments, but all of this is leading up to something. Ex 28:30 Also put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate, so they may be over Aaron’s heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord. Thus Aaron will always bear the means of making decisions for the Israelites over his heart before the Lord. For the longest time, I was really troubled by the whole concept of the Urim and Thummin. I thought that they used them to cast lots. Like pagans did with bones and such. And I couldnt understand why the Lord would do something so similar to witchcraft. But what I found out was really interesting. Some stones, such as crystal geodes can be used to create electricity. Some of us remember crystal radios. And down in South America they have found a town where the walls of the buildings are made from stone that conducts electricity and they have found that this ancient town had electricity. These specific stones not only have specific properties, but together the Lord used them to light up the Urim and Thummin to give Aaron answers. Now each of the stones individually represented one of the twelve tribes. Have you ever wondered where we got the idea of birthstones? Or how the stones tie into the zodiac and the birth month of each of the twelve sons of Jacob. I know by now that many people have probably came to a screeching halt with that word zodiac... but bare with me here. The zodiac (called the Mazzaroth) in Hebrew was the name given to the stars foundd on the celestrial equator. And the word means constellation. In Genesis... Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to ddivide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and for years; Before satan perverted the science of Astronomy, those stars were put there for us to know what season it was, to know the day, for navigational purposes. Our Daniel of the bible is the man who created what we know as the Magi today. He taught them how to watch the stars for the birth of the Messiah. That knowledge was passed down to the Wiseman who made their way to find the baby Jesus.
