The U.S. ranks last out of 16 industrialized countries on a measure of mortality amenable to medical care (deaths that might have been prevented with timely and effective care). Premature death rates are 68 percent higher than in the best-performing countries. In a new study, the amenable mortality rates of three Western European nations was compared to the United States. While the rates declined over time for the United Kingdon, Germany, and France, the U.S rates still lag behind. Why Not the Best?
