The UNBURNED truth: BC residents often hear from government and industry that LNG is cleaner than oil and coal. Behind this statement is the fact that when natural gas is burned it releases less C02 than when coal or oil is burned. This is true (its about half as much). However, what these voices do not mention is that when natural gas is released into the atmosphere unburned, it is 25 times stronger than C02 as a greenhouse gas. Based on this fact, if only 3.2 % of the gas that industry extracts ends up leaking into the air before it is burned (say, from a frack well, a pipeline, a terminal, a tanker, etc...) then all climate advantage over coal and oil is lost. Now, just how much gas does leak from wells, pipelines, houses, etc.? 4%, according to conservative studies. That means natural gas is worse than coal.
