The US House of Representatives today passed whats called the Upton Bill, proposed by a Republican, it basically does what President Obama talked yesterday about needing to be done, that is, extending for a year people being able to keep their old policies. However, the trap is what the Upton Bill actually does is give vulnerable Democrats in the house a chance to appear to break with Obama and show their bipartisanship by voting along with the Upton Bill, therefore giving them cover with their constituents, while knowing that when that bill hits the Senate, it will be killed anyway. The question Republicans should be asking themselves is if the Upton Bill had been for longer than a year, that is, past the 2014 midterm elections, would Democrats have voted for it then? The answer is probably not. So, what the vote by House Democrats does for them today is give them cover going into the 2014 midterms, not a smart thing for the Republicans to let them do.
