The US Mainstream media is a deep embarrassment at this point. These people are deluding themselves into thinking they are being objective, while simply and consistently parroting the power narrative - no matter how disingenuous that narrative is. (And in the case of Edward Snowden, as well as in multiple other instances - that will be provable - with time - when we have more courageous whistleblowers or are finally able to break down the thick walls of secrecy erected by both Bush and Obama, in order to protect people and trends they have no business protecting.) Whether the abysmal state of US mainstream media is the result of power-brokering and the Bush administration unleashing the trend of access media (as in, behave yourselves and toe the line or you dont get to join our club of elites), or whether it is a consequence of the exponential growth of corporate power over the last four decades - to the point that the corporate psyche seems increasingly interchangeable with the psyche of Americas corporate class, or whether it is also something even more complex than this, remains to be seen. But the end result? Mainstream media in the United States is a joke and a national disgrace. These reporters arrogantly and reflexively dismiss those who actually try to change broken systems by NOT toeing a line past a certain point - essentially that point when doing so comes to mean a a juncture where one has to choose between the total selling of ones soul through chronic compliance with low-level madness, or chooses risking being made fun of by spineless colleagues. People like Snowden, Chris Hedges, Noam Chomsky and so many others who have dared to NOT toe the line to protect their ability to keep rising in the right channels or remaining at the top of their particular heaps are cast by those with the biggest platforms as traitors, cowards, lunatics and fools. Like Snowden or Julian Assange, some of them face life in prison for daring to do something that only briefly upends systems that have been calcified in their own lunacy - systems that, if not stopped, WILL culminate in full-blown (in our case corporate) fascism - as history has repeatedly shown. These US mainstream media reporters stubbornly cling to some idea of their own exceptionalism. Perhaps that self-delusion is partly a defense mechanism for self-survival or perhaps it is partly fueled by the dregs of the Cold War era and its impact on our media - and the unshakable belief that in America, we dont do propaganda for the state. And all the while they are doing propaganda for the state - functioning as dutiful mouthpieces for the administrations carefully crafted narrative where perceived threats are concerned - even when the threat is to toxic trends. Here are Williams and others, dutifully charging our enemies and handily trotting out triteness and non-issues, day in, day out, with each and every breath.
