The US is opposed to the ISIS in Iraq while supporting the insurgents in Syria. This is because Syria is an enemy of Israel and an ally of Russia. The Russians are also opposed to the ISIS in Iraq even though the current (extremely shaky) Iraq government is a US ally. This is because the Russians, unlike the largely clueless US, have noticed that the insurgents in Iraq and the ISIS are basically on the same side, and in some cases are the same guys. So are we on the same side in Iraq as the Russians, even though we are on opposite sides in Syria? Mind you, all of this is about one relatively small Islamic insurgent group. This sort of my enemys enemy is my brother-in-law weirdness abounds. The are multiple Kurdish insurgent groups, Islamic factions more finely divided than the relatively simple Shiite/Sunni that we have finally begun to take seriously after decades of saying Youve seen one, youve seen them all, factions and rivalries within and between groups we choose to regard as a single entity, etc. ad nauseum. Im tempted to say its Bosnia with sand, except that the Middle East is far more complicated. No military action we take in that region can do anything but make it worse. news.yahoo/russia-not-sit-idly-jihadists-press-iraq-assault-133213933.html
