The USD 457 Board of Education met at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 22nd. They recognized three school bus drivers who placed in the Kansas State Pupil Transportation Association’s School Bus Rodeo Safety Competition held in Hutchinson, Kansas in June. Melanie Turner took fifth place, Justin Guerrero placed sixth, and Debra Brungardt placed ninth in the competition. The board approved the budget for publication. The mill levy would increase by 0.79 mills for 2013-14 to 50.67 mills, up from the 49.88 mills from last year’s budget. The formal budget hearing for the 2013-14 budget will be at the August 12th meeting in the Educational Support Center Boardroom, 1205 Fleming Street. A policy that would prohibit district employees with concealed-carry permits from bringing handguns on school property or to school-sponsored activities was approved. The policy is a result of the recent law that was enacted by the state of Kansas. The board approved a five-year strategic plan for the district. There are three main initiatives that are the foundation of the plan. The first initiative of the plan is student achievement. The second initiative is to enhance communication and collaboration. The third initiative is efficiency, safety and infrastructure. Goals were developed under each initiative with sub-goals developed under each goal. The sub-goals will be used to determine annual performance objectives for administrators and staff. The board discussed committee assignments and board training opportunities for the school year.
