The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake is proud and very pleased to announce our canine unit has recently triumphed in two esteemed, reality based police canine competitions for 2014, wherein canine officers and their four-legged partners are judged and evaluated in areas such as obedience, searching ability and handler protection. On September 13th & 14th the statewide Utah Police Officers’ Association canine trials were held in Ogden. During these trials all six of the teams competed and each team won individual awards; but beyond those, the trophy most sought after by agencies from around the state, “First Place – Top Agency”, was bestowed upon the UPD Canine Unit. On October 17-19, the canine unit competed in the even more prestigious nationwide trials held in Las Vegas, Nevada. These trials were hosted by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and police canine teams from all over the nation and even other countries vied to prove they were ‘the top dog’. There, our handlers again demonstrated their prowess by winning multiple individual awards but proved over that our canine unit is second to none, by winning the most coveted police canine award in the country, “First Place – Top Agency”. The UPD Canine Unit is honored to bring these two distinguished citations back to the communities we serve and we look forward to continuing to provide excellent benefit to our citizens for the years to come.
