The Union The Progressive Unionist Party is fully committed to maintaining and strengthening the present constitutional position of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom. We are not unionists among 2 million citizens locally but of 62 million across the UK. We as a party recognise that from an economic position, our place within the union is stronger than ever. A union that respects cultural, ethnic and religious diversity and binds us together, no more so in an ever changing, fluid Northern Ireland where we must strive to better cement a pluralist and harmonious society. This party shall work by all democratic means to ensure that there will be no change to the United Kingdom or Northern Irelands place within it and will challenge anyone who wishes to attack that position. Government The PUP believes that the form of government for Northern Ireland should be a complete partnership of devolved government. Our party has promoted the concept of sharing responsibility since 1979. It is our belief that a peaceful future can achieved through the concept of shared responsibility in an honourable partnership. Education The Progressive Unionist Party are committed to breaking the cycle of educational underachievement and educational disadvantage within working class communities. We believe that the education system should put our children in the position to build a society of equality. Education should be a basic entitlement and we believe integrated education is a priority for progression. Just one in 10 protestant working class pupils continue on to university compared to one in 5 catholic pupils. When broken down into different protestant working class areas, the statistics in some cases are even lower. We should seek an alternative educational provision for underachieving schools.
