The United Nations System The United Nations is not a world - TopicsExpress

The United Nations System The United Nations is not a world government, and it does not make laws. It provides, however, the means to help resolve international conflict and formulate policies on matters affecting everyone. At the UN, all Member States have a voice and vote in this process. The complex system of the United Nations is made up of six main organs, a series of affiliated bodies and programmes, and specialised agencies and independent institutions. Let’s focus our attention on the main body of the organisation, made up of the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat. The Charter of the United Nations foresees that these organs will achieve the following goals of the organisation: • To maintain international peace and security; • To develop friendly relations between nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples; • To achieve international co-operation in solving the international problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character, and to promote the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all; • To harmonies the actions of countries in the attainment of these common goals.
