The United Nations was established 69 years ago today. It has been an arbiter of peace for peace ever since. In 1988 General Secretary of the CPSU Mikhail Gorbachev delivered a now famous speech concerning the rapid reduction of arms and Soviet military presence in Eastern Eurpoe that, to some, mark the ideological end to the Cold War. Just hours later Secretary Gorbachev met with President Ronald Reagan and President-elect George HW Bush in the Admirals House here on Governors Island in what would be Reagan and Gorbachevs last official meeting as heads of state.
