The United Negro College Fund recently announced its receipt of a $25-million grant from the billionaire Koch brothers, who also fund efforts to suppress voters’ rights and workers’ rights. AFSCME has had a proud partnership with UNCF, through our Union Scholars Program, that we are now severing. As President Lee Saunders stated in his letter to UNCF’s Michael Lomax: We must hold ourselves to the same standards that we promote through the Union Scholars Program: to practice what we preach, to fight for social justice, and to stand up for what we believe. I cannot in good conscience face these students or AFSCME’s members if I looked the other way and ignored your actions. A principle is a terrible thing to waste.
