The United States Government says corruption must be fought in Malawi by clear messages and actions from the senior-most levels of government demonstrating that no one is immune to investigation and prosecution if involved in corrupt practices. US Embassy in Malawi Public Affairs Officer Gabriel Hons-Olivier said development partners have expressed willingness to support the government on the matter. “We welcome the Government’s requests for how we may be able to help, but fundamentally corruption in Malawi must be fought by clear messages and actions from the senior- most levels of government showing that no one is immune to investigation and prosecution if involved in corrupt practices,” he said. He said those in government who are committed to accountability and transparency need to be supported. “We take the Vice President at his word and look forward to the tangible actions that the government will take in the coming days and weeks to conclude investigations into ad hoc and systematic corruption in government and to hold those responsible to account. “Development partners shared our concerns with the Vice President that corruption could risk undermining the gains that Malawi has achieved in recent years and erode public and donor confidence. The Vice President was very forthcoming in highlighting the nature of the challenges and pledging to address corruption regardless of who is involved,” said Hon- Olivier on the meeting development partners had with the Vice President Khumbo Kachali on the alleged plunder at Capital Hill. Hons-Olivier called on President Joyce Banda to act fast and decisively against corruption in the country. These comments are being made hot on the heels of reports of rampant corruption and looting of government resources especially at Capital Hill. So far top government officials implicated in the scandal are veep himself Khumbo Kachali, Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara and Finance Minister Ken Lipenga.
