The Uranium Lie, part 3. Where did this story come from in the first place? Was it ever credible? Mmmmnope. Really not. It originated in Rome when some documents were supposedly stolen from Nigers embassy there in January 2001. By October 2001 Italys military intelligence agency had those documents, and they sent a report to the CIA. But the documents didnt look right. They looked like forgeries. Nigers national emblem was wrong. The documents stated that they were top secret, but they were only stamped Confidential. They were signed with the name of a foreign minister who hadnt actually been the foreign minister for years. Remember Mohamed El Baradei, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency? He told the UN Security Council that the documents were not authentic. Even the CIAs National Intelligence Council sent a memo to Dum-Dum, 4 days before his SOTU address, stating that the Niger story is baseless and should be laid to rest. Did that stop Dubya from plowing ahead with the story? Of course not. Full steam ahead he went because is supported the case for invading Iraq. Well, what did you expect from a President who didnt read memos?
