The Use of Technology in Medicine The reason we innovate in - TopicsExpress

The Use of Technology in Medicine The reason we innovate in primary care is (1) to be accessible to our patients, (2) to perform administrative duties more efficiently, (3) to submit claims to insurance with more accuracy and (4) market our practices. Out of these four points, I focus on patient connections. The rest takes care of themselves. We cannot master all four points and serve our patients well. At this point I should mention that I believe smaller is better. I am a concierge pediatrician with a full practice because I focus on #1. By focusing on patient care, providing myself time to educate patients and lecturing to the community, community service that other physicians do not have time to support, I maximize technology since I take small bytes of everything I do. Patients contact me via HIPAA secure messaging or emails, I use YouTube and DropBox to share important information, I send electronic newsletters every week to physicians and patients, I dictate into my smartphone when seeing child abuse patients for the CPT clinic, etc. The options are amazing. The first step in the use of technology is to understand that ultimately it is a human relations task. I forego large bureaucratic and political ramblings for the best damn care a patient could receive in the outpatient setting. This is my niche and my use of technology outpaces almost all pediatricians by a stone age.
