The Verdict on The Double. A film that threatens to be incredibly irritating, and has rattled some critics due to its overt lifting of Eraserhead and Brazil stylings. As well as the Dostoyevsky mind labyrinth this is drawn from theres also a shade or two of After Hours discomfort. Jesse Eisenberg does well, reigned in fairly tightly under the somewhat self-conscious direction. Well designed and fairly amusing this pleased somewhat where it wasnt expected to. Mia Waskiowska is a suitably mischievous presence and theres a Chris Morris moment thrown in. So, while it suffers from not having too much identity of its own this is quite smartly put together. If you can forgive the lack of individual voice, and the slightly stagey, academic tone to it there is fun to be had. A minor curiosity, earning a decent but not more than. 3/5
