The Village HOUSING, INDIA, NEWS, SANJAY PURI ARCHITECTS THE VILLAGE BY SANJAY PURI ARCHITECTS OCTOBER 11, 2014 MARCO RINALDI 5 The VillageThe 2.0 acre plot is a part of a 100 acre development. Located on a steeply contoured site this residential project creates apartments that cascade down along the existing land slopes allowing each one to open into a series of sheltered terraces and open gardens. The VillageEach apartment feels like an individual house nestled in the hilly land. Echoing the undulating steep slopes, the houses step diagonally or frontally and merge with the terrain creating minimal intervention with the land. The VillageBuilt mostly in the local basalt stone available on site, the design creates a sustainable environment with minimal cutting of land, north orientation of all houses in response to the average temperatures of 35°C in the region and channeling all runoff water to water harvesting tanks from the profusely terraced structure. The VillageDesigned in response to the site, ‘The Village’ is an organic design solution that has emerged from its context and creates homes that become a part of the site. The VillageDepending upon the contours of the land, the built spaces step along them diagonally creating open terrace gardens outside each room which are sheltered by pergolas in response to the arid hot climate of the site’s location (average temperature of 30 to 35°C) throughout the year.
