The Village just sent out this email notification: The Village is seeking residents assistance by asking for their help in taking care of our sanitary sewer system. The recent trend of flushable wipes is leading to major problems with local sanitary sewer systems. Wipes that are labeled as flushable do not break down enough to flow through sanitary sewers, pumps and bar screens at wastewater treatment plants. These wipes can cause clogs within the municipal sewer system and in a residents private plumbing system, which damage pumps and can lead to increased maintenance and expensive repairs. However, manufacturers currently label products as flushable if they can pass through a homes plumbing system. The only paper product that should be flushed is toilet paper The Water Environment Federation posted a YouTube video called Will It Flush? that demonstrates how several common household objects fail to break down in laboratory testing. Visit youtube and search Water Environment Federation Will It Flush to view the video. This is a great opportunity to learn about your local sewer system. Here are additional ways to protect your homes plumbing system and the local sanitary sewer system: * Dont dispose of household grease in sinks, toilets or garbage disposals. * Dont dispose of bones and food scraps down the kitchen sink. * Scrape grease from trays, plates, pots, pans and utensils into the trash. * Use baskets/strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and other solids. * Compost food scraps. * Dont dispose of diapers or other disposable hygiene products in your toilets. * Dont throw towels, hair and rags down the toilet. *Dont rinse dishes in hot water prior to loading the dishwasher as this will melt any fats and wash them into the sewer system. When the water cools, fat is left behind in the pipe. For more information, please contact Village Hall at (847) 356-8252.
