The Wakefield Steam Train has been immortalized over the years in song and on film. Well-known Ottawa and Gatineau Valley singer Wayne Rostadt composed a special song. Although the title is Highway 11, the precursor to todays Highway 105, the song was really about the railway line up the Gatineau Valley. Economics dictate that you cant go to Maniwaki by rail. The tourist potential that was realized by a group of visionaries in 1985 ensured that the tracks stayed in as far as Wakefield. They were responsible for a successful enterprise that carried up to 50,000 passengers a year and gave full and part time employment to approximately 100 folks. As the exercise for la relance du ptit train continues, lets make sure that the final solution includes the timely repair of the Mile Hill and the re-establishing of service over the whole corridor from Gatineau (Hull) to Wakefield.
