The Walking Dead, Electronic Music + Orchestral, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and a storys atmosphere (I really need to start a blog with proper links and embedded photos. For now I will use FB) ---Sometimes you are going along plowing through a TV show or story... and then something fantastic happens. A moment that gives you something I can only describe as an out of body experience from you being absorbed in the storys world. Ive had this happen before. A few summers ago watching all of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes and it came to the episode Hush where for the majority of the time, there is no dialogue. Its such a fantastic episode in every way (nominated for an Emmy) from the acting down to the monsters truly terrifying makeup (jpegs2.tripod/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/gentlemen3.jpg) You can watch it out of context if you like but it does ruin the effect if you arent familiar with the show. Im only bringing this up because --- I just had a similar out of body experience experience while viewing The Walking Dead specifically brought about with this music The Pulse. Its played at a couple different episodes in the show, but always when a character is at one of the darkest, most sinister choices or actions. Besides the syncopated light drum pattering in the background, its really pretty simple and its meant to be. I really enjoy when music that is basic its still intriguing. https://youtube/watch?v=Av-sDbo271o ----While on the topic of music this seems to be the perfect time to bring up electronic music along with orchestral music as used above. My experience from going to school for music and being around performers that perform classical music in its broad definition is that there is an intense separation, dislike or taboo about electronic music. Maybe its just because the current popular trend for electronic music is meant to be danced to and thats not for everyones tastes, but for whatever reason, it gets avoided. There is a ton of great dance and non-dance oriented electronic music out there if people would only give it a chance. Hans Zimmer talks a bit about it in this great article here and has a great interview for anyone who is a fan of Hans Zimmer or Interstellar. All music is based on technology. “A violin is a piece of technology. It’s a tree and somebody did horrible things to a cat [sic]. That then becomes a musical instrument. When I first started, there was this segregation. You couldn’t have a fuzz guitar in an orchestra.” Thankfully I think this is coming around a bit but there is so much untapped potential with electronic music mixing with other genres especially outside of dance music. youredm/2014/11/05/hans-zimmers-electronic-music-quite-edm/
