The Weekly Dirt Mespilus germanica – Common Medlar Sitting - TopicsExpress

The Weekly Dirt Mespilus germanica – Common Medlar Sitting across the Fisher lawn from one another are two special little trees. These interesting specimens are known as Medlar or Common Medlar trees. In Trees of Seattle author Arthur Lee Jacobson describes the tree as “A quaint, awkward and humble aberration related to hawthorn and crabapple trees”. These days it is very rare to see one of these trees in cultivation although they were once widely grown for their fruit. The fruit of the Medlar is unusual in that it is harvested and eaten in winter after it has “bletted” or rotted. These trees once sat on either side of the old Flag Pavilion. When the pavilion was demolished they were saved in large wooden tree boxes for over a year until they could be placed into the new landscapes where they still grow today.
