The Westbeth Residence in the West Village used to be the - TopicsExpress

The Westbeth Residence in the West Village used to be the headquarters of Bell Laboratories, the largest industrial research facility in the world. When it closed in the 1960s, low- and middle-income artists and their families moved in. Before long, Westbeth was the worlds largest artist residence, with hundreds of loft apartments occupied at way below market value. Today, Westbeth is still home to a creative community of artists: musicians, potters, painters, and printers. Their beautiful work is even exhibited in the otherwise-ordinary lobbies and hallways of this rabbit warren building. I called in to Westbeth on Sunday for their annual Flea Market in the buildings basement. All proceeds go to projects that beautify the building, and the public areas surrounding it. Naturally I headed straight for the books, and bought home 6 classics for the bargain price of $8. Winner! Stay tuned for the Westbeth write-up to follow, including news about a special sale this coming weekend (Nov 15th)!
