The Western Australian Christmas tree (Nuytsia floribunda) is the largest species of mistletoe in the World. It occurs only in Western Australia, including on Bush Heritage Australias Cherininup and Monjebup Reserves (bit.ly/1fIZUFe). Its called the Christmas tree because it flowers so profusely at this time of the year. Australia has 88 mistletoe species (bit.ly/1sOar5Y) all of them being parasites of other plants, attaching to them to extract nutrients and water. Most grow on branches of their hosts. Only the Christmas tree and Louisas Mistletoe (Atkinsonia ligustrina), a shrub of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales (bit.ly/1sOaFtO) grow on the ground. They attach themselves to their hosts by their roots.
