The White Knight and the Fair Maiden There comes a time when the white knight Climbs off his mighty warhorse with burnish’d hooves, Takes off his armor, his brazen greaves And feathered helmet too, To sit beside a still lake and simply wait To find happiness yes, and this too— Infinite peace inside himself Without having first to rescue and then possess A fair maiden in distress. Look at him! In his soul all the waters of the earth And simple human contentment intermingle and flow— The method to accomplish this he knows. The seed within his body And the light within his mind Require no hero’s quest No leap of faith, no dragons to conquer, No monsters to tame There are kingdoms far greater within That he can claim and master as his domain The treasures far greater Than anything the human race has found So great the angels themselves are forbidden To take, lay hold of, their glory bound. There comes a time when the fair maiden Picks up her swords and fights for herself. She needs no knight to rescue her, Her honor to protect, to offer respect, Or to trust lest she falter, fail, and fall Her sword does not fight to wound the flesh Rather it is a mighty sword Of will and spirit She lays hold of to possess No man can cross swords with her Her mastery over self is so complete She can by her eyes, her voice, her will, or her mind Command a man, a king, or a land Shaping its fate and destiny Through the powers of creation that flow through her hands The means to accomplish this she understands. What is the end of this? What is the final gift? The inner elixir of the heart That creates the deepest joy Life celebrates? What if the white knight and the fair maiden meet Each having united from within Joined with their opposite so they are already complete? Do they not unite like a river flowing into the sea Like two clouds that join Or sunlight shining dazzling bright in ice? Do we not witness this love In the empty sky above Where all the stars blaze at night? Dawn and evening twilight The deepest craving and its gratification They lay hold of each other In a wild dance As deep as the mysteries of the constellations As deep as the mystery of you and me.
