The #WhyIStayed movement is an important conversation aiming to bridge the gap for those who have a hard time understanding where a victim of family or interpersonal violence is coming from. Allegations that NFL executives received footage of Ray Rice assaulting his wife as early as April are the latest in the developing expose of the NFLs appalling policy on domestic violence. Undoubtedly there will be more headlines to come through the week. But there is a bigger story beyond Rices horrific violence against his wife, and the subsequent failure of a major American organization to adequately react. While it is an important step in the domestic violence awareness movement that the conversation has become so mainstream that Ray Rice and the NFL are being called to the carpet, many of the comments left online through different news and social media platforms are downright disturbing. They illustrate that many in our society still have a profound misunderstanding of the complex issues relating to domestic violence.
