The Wind Rises hit the dollar theater in Sugarhouse last night. Today I underdtand why Miyazaki san has chosen this to be his swan song. It is his best work. I am reminded anew why Lassiter was so keen on forging a bond between Pixar and Studio Ghibli. And I am awestruck by the quality of the English dubbed version. Not as good as the Japanese version that Kate and I saw a few months ago, but easily the best English dub of a Japanese film that I have ever seen. I intend to come watch this several more times before it leaves this theater. It is worth a great deal of effort to come see it on a big screen. And no, I dont mean its worth it if youre an anime geek or an art film lover. I mean its worth the effort. period. One day your grandkids will ask you for your stories about when you saw it. Just as my ex-wife was frequently regaled with stories about The Wizard of Oz, which they saw on their first date. There is a lot in this film that I need to ponder. An artist can create great art, even in time of war
