The Wives of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) It is well known that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was allowed to marry more than four wives. It was allowed only for the Prophet, not for his Ummah (nation), and he was granted this option for many purposes. So he had thirteen wives, and when he died he left behind nine widows. Two of his wives died in his lifetime: Khadijah bint Khuwailid and Zainab bint Khuzaimah. There were another two wives with whom the Prophet did not consummate the marriage. The wives of the Prophet: 1. Khadijah bint Khuwailid married the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he was 25 years old and she was 40. She was the first wife of the Prophet and he did not marry anyone else while she was alive. All of the Prophets children were from Khadijah except Ibrahim. She died at the age of 65 in 10 AH. 2. Sawda bin Zam`ah married the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Shawwal in the tenth year of his Prophethood and one month after the death of Khadijah. Sawda died in Madinah in Shawwal in 54 AH. 3. `A’ishah bint Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq married the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Shawwal in the eleventh year of his Prophethood and one year after his marriage to Sawda. That was two years and five months before the Hijrah. He consummated his marriage to `A’ishah in Shawwal seven months after the Hijrah when she was 9 years old. ‘A’ishah was the only virgin the Prophet married, and she was his most beloved wife. `A’ishah died in 17th of Ramadan in 57 AH and was buried in Al-Baqi`. 4. She made an agreement with him to free her in return for money, so she went to the Prophet and asked his help to be freed from slavery. The Prophet sympathized with her and offered to pay off her contract and marry her. She accepted without hesitation. They were married in Sha`ban in 6 AH and she died in Rabi` al-Awal in 56 AH at the age of 65. 9. After his death, the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent `Amr bin Umayyah Al-Damri as his envoy to propose marriage to her under the auspices of the Negus (Al-Najashi). She accepted and the Negus conducted the marriage contract, and she went to the Prophet accompanied by Shurhabil ibn Hasanah. The Prophet consummated his marriage with her after the Battle of Khaybar. She died in 42 AH. 10. Safiyya bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab was a leader of Bani Al-Nadir.
