The Wolverine – 2.5/5 I struggled to complete “The Wolverine” for the past several weeks. Finally, yesterday I finished the film. Why did it take me a few weeks to complete this film? Well, I kept falling asleep. I, for one, enjoy watching films late at night. Almost every time I switch a film on I make sure to watch it until the ending credits. Even I was left baffled after falling asleep on my couch 15 minutes into the film. I must admit that enduring the first 30 minutes of this film was a difficult task. Well, was the film that boring or was it that I was exhausted? First things first, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is outstanding. The man has played the character for the umpteenth time yet he still manages to entertain with his performance. I cannot see anyone else in the role of Logan. Not even Ben Affleck hahahahaha. Where the film lacks is the unmoving pace in which the film advances. The storyline/premise is what the director James Mangold focuses on the most. However, this film tends to force a simple plot into a complex muddle. I do not know if the viewers who have watched this film feel the same as I do, but this film lacks in the action department. There are only three to four action sequences, which is very unlikely when it comes to a superhero film. Besides the action sequences involving the rapid train, the other sequences were not exciting. As for the villains, “The Viper” whose role had been enacted by an unfamiliar face (Sveltana) was the only negative character that impressed. She was sizzling hot until for some odd reason towards the end of the film she removed the outer layer of her skin revealing a very unattractive bald head. Tao Okamoto, who had a crucial character to play, is a stunner. Rila Fukushima got the opportunity to display her fighting skill. And Hiroyuki Sanada was decent in his role as the avaricious father. Despite the decent performances, I still felt as if the dialogues that the actors had voiced were cliched. For most of the time, Hugh replied with a grunt and a grrr. I understand that Wolverine is supposed to be this serious bad-ass character but why make him the superhero that replies with those one-word answers. I do not know about you all, but I despise that. Now did I mention that I watched this film without subtitles? Viewers, be aware. There are many scenes in this film in which the Japanese language is utilized. How I wish I understood Japanese. Overall, if you are a fan of X-Men or Wolverine this film should be watched. If you are not a fan and go by the decent reviews that the critics have written, I advise you to leave this film alone. For me, “The Wolverine” was hard to finish, probably because I was not thoroughly entertained. However, Hugh Jackman himself deserves a 2.5/5.
