The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates was designed in the 19th century, served as a library and cultural center throughout the 20th century, and is now revitalized to inspire all who visit to join the global fight against hunger. To honor our buildings rich history, we will post a historical feature every other week until the end of the year! Initially, the Ruan Laureates Room of the Hall of Laureates served as the city library’s reading, periodical, and reference room, providing a quiet space for library guests to browse and read newspapers and magazines. Here, one would find rows of tables and chairs, the reference and magazine room, and a space for lectures and social events. Today, the room traces the history of food and agriculture, as well as identifies great agricultural figures of world history. Reproductions of historic works of art, such as a giclée reproduction of a Diego Rivera mural and a marble reproduction of a Sumerian bas relief, depict scenes of agriculture and food production. An illuminated stained-glass globe, four-foot in diameter and created by Larry Brookins of Sonoma, California, is structured without national boundaries. Instead, it is focused on outlining the twelve areas where agriculture had its origins from earliest times.
