The World Wide Web, arguably which became the most powerful communication medium the world has ever known, marks its 25th anniversary today. March12https://facebook/#!/groups/friends.of.the.borderless.world/ The World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3, commonly known as the web) is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them via hyperlinks. In March 1989 Sir Timothy John Tim Berners-Lee (born 8 June 1955), a British computer scientist and former CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research, Geneva, Switzerland) employee, wrote a proposal for what would eventually become the World Wide Web. The 1989 proposal was meant for a more effective CERN communication system but Berners-Lee eventually realized the concept could be implemented throughout the world. Berners-Lee and Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau proposed in 1990 to use hypertext to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will, and Berners-Lee finished the first website in December of that year. Berners-Lee posted the project on the alt.hypertext newsgroup on 7 August 1991. In 2001 he became a fellow of the Royal Society. He has been the recipient of several international awards including the Japan Prize, the Prince of Asturias Foundation Prize, the Millennium Technology Prize and Germany’s Die Quadriga award. In 2004 he was knighted by H.M. Queen Elizabeth and in 2007 he was awarded the Order of Merit. He is the author of “Weaving the Web”.
