The act of performing hijama is a Sunna of the Prophet Muhammad صل الله عليه و سلم and it is extensively reported in a wide collection of authentic ahadith. Its practice is strongly recommended and emphasized in a number of narrations. The practice of hijama forms an integral part of Islamic Prophetic Medicine. Hijama was a common practice of the Prophet Muhammad صل الله عليه و سلم and his companions for the treatment of a wide range of ailments and maladies as well as a form of body maintenance and health promotion. What is Cupping or Hijama? Hijama or cupping is a safe, non-invasive and economical way of curing and preventing many diseases. Though Chinese use of this method was limited to certain medical complications like lung infections, colds, to treat internal organ disorders, joint pain, etc., the scope of benefits offered by hijama are much broader and comprehensive. The word "hijama" means "drawing out" in Arabic. It is now being recognized as an alternative medicine or alternative way of treating a myriad of diseases and bodily disorders. Modern medical science also endorses the various benefits of hijama and has even encouraged its practice in certain cases. In this non-surgical procedure, toxic or "bad" blood is drawn out from the body. Certain cupping points on the body are administered to in order to effectuate this. On these select points, blood is summoned and accumulates so that it is then drawn out via a vacuum apparatus (the cup). The blood is made to accumulate upon the surface of the skin where minute incisions are introduced on the skin; the toxic blood is then drawn out from the incisions and is collected in the cup from where it is removed. Benefits of Hijama (Cupping) Hijama, a non-intrusive , non-invasive medicinal therapy that has been in practice for centuries by Asians, Africans, Indians, East and S.E. Asians as well as Europeans, is noted to promote the flow of energy in the blood. It removes toxins and foreign bodies from the blood. It encourages and increases recovery time and aids in convalescence. Hijama is known to prevent many diseases and, therefore, can be considered one of the best preventive measures against a host of maladies. Moreover, within Islamic tradition, hijama has also been invoked or employed in treating those under the influence of sortilege or malevolent incantations, jinn etc. Hijama has no side effects as long as performed properly. It is also worth noting that about 70% of all diseases or disorders are caused by the failure of blood to circulate properly in the body, this includes common place ailments and conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease etc. Furthermore, when we get sick, or our body organs fail to perform optimally when our blood circulates while polluted with various toxins and other impurities. Unless the toxins and foreign bodies are removed from the body or from the blood, not only is recovery slow or less likely but, left untreated, these ailments may manifest or evolve into more malignant diseases and disorders. Hijama is the best way to remove harmful toxins from the blood stream, and the results will obviously be a healthy and properly functioning body. We should never forget that this highly useful and recommended Sunna of the Prophet (s) helps us in curing or controlling a whole raft of diseases and infections: hypertension, circulatory diseases, pains, diabetes, hemorrhoids, allergies, rashes, impotence, issues with nerves, depression, infertility, cancer, etc. and may even slow signs and the appearance of aging. Importance of Hijama in the Divine Guidance In lieu of promoting the medicinal benefits of cupping, let us view the following ahadith that demonstrate the Prophetic emphasis on hijama. “Indeed in hijama [cupping] there is a cure”. – Saheeh Muslim “Indeed, the best of remedies you have is hijama [cupping]”. – Saheeh Al Bukhari “Hijama is the most helpful procedure for human beings to cure themselves”.– Saheeh Al Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim The importance of hijama in the Divine Guidance can further be stressed by the following words, which were related to the Prophet (s) on the night of the Israa (ascension to the heavens) by angels: “O Mohammed, order your ummah [people] with hijama [cupping]”.– Saheeh, Sunan Tirmidhi. The Prophet Muhammad صل الله عليه و سلم is reported to have had hijama performed on his head for a migraine [Bukhari], on his foot after a sprain [Ibn Majah], on his neck [Abu Dawud], on his hip for hip pain [Abu Dawud] and between his shoulders for detoxification [Ahmad]. Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم said: “I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: Upon you is cupping [hijama], O Muhammad.” (Saheeh, Sunan ibn Majah) “The best medicine with which you treat yourselves is cupping, or it is one of the best of your medicines.” or “The treatment you can use is cupping.” [Bukhari: 5371] “Cupping is the most helpful procedure for human beings to cure themselves.” [Bukhari and Muslim] Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger صل الله عليه و سلم said, “If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping [hijama].” [Sunan Abu Dawud, Sunan Ibn Majah]
